On September 6, 1956, a fire destroyed the clock tower of Memorial Hall on the Harvard University campus. The hall had been built in 1874, and the tower modified by the addition of copper ornamentation in 1878 and the installation of four clock faces in 1897. Thomas Flood was a firefighter in the Cambridge Fire Department. Recently married in 1956, the Floods received the super-8 movie camera as a wedding present.
